Today’s post is inspired by a reader request. The question was: should shoes and handbags be the same color or is it okay to mix shades? The quick answer is yes to both! I put together a quick guide and a few visual pairings to help anyone who may find themselves second guessing their bag and shoe combinations.
You can certainly pair a black bag with black shoes, but my suggestion is to have some texture in one of the pieces. For example, a pair of solid black booties with a quilted or embellished black bag. Otherwise, the pairing runs the risk of falling a bit flat.
The photo below is an example of how you can pair the same color bag and shoes. The embellishments on the clutch adds the texture I was mentioning.
Another tip if you want to lean towards matching colors is to pair together monochrome colors. So that could look something like black shoes with a gray bag or dark brown shoes and a beige bag. This helps to create interest in your outfit without being too ‘matchy matchy’.
SHOP MONOCHROME PAIRINGS:
If you are pairing prints, try coordinating it to one of the subtle colors found in the print. For example, these snakeskin mules has a beige base color. You could pair it with a beige purse or use the monochrome tip I mentioned earlier and pair it with a bag in darker shade of brown.

Following the monochrome tip, the beige mules are lighter shade than the bag. The quilted pattern also adds texture!
Here is an outfit showing how matching prints could work together! The leopard prints aren’t identical and the color of the bag is a couple of shades darker than the mules.
I hope you found this helpful!! Let me know if you have any other post recommendations. I would be happy to cover it on the blog. Thank you so much for stopping by.
