Not only can area rugs change the look of an entire room by adding a touch of color and texture, but it can also make a bedroom feel larger by choosing the right size and placement. Even carpeted bedrooms can benefit from adding a rug layered on top. I’ll be sharing some bedroom rug placement tips and how to pick the right area rug size for your bedroom. Since we are moving, I’m also sharing a design idea for our future bedroom below!
Here are some general tips to follow when arranging your bedroom furniture over a rug:
Choosing a rug that is too small for your bed is a common mistake and can actually make your room look smaller and feel unbalanced. The 8’x10′ rug size is the most popular as it works for both queen and king size beds. Let’s talk about rug sizes depending on the size of your bed!
A 9’x12′ area rug is quite large but when you’re working with a king bed, it is proportionate and what I prefer to use if there is enough space. This size rug will give you plenty of space to cover both sides of the bed as well as the end of the bed.
An 8’x10′ area rug would also work under a king bed. If you’re working with a smaller primary bedroom, I would recommend going with this size so that the rug doesn’t cover too much space which can look overwhelming.
Pictured above is our old guest bedroom. We had a queen size bed with a 8’x10′ area rug underneath. As you can see, it’s big enough to fit the entire bed and bench with space to spare. There is also enough room for the part of the nightstands to fit as well.
